In the Beginning
In February 2004, Rj Development Co. was formed in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania by Robert Gillenberger, Jr. to help serve the needs of Homeowners and Condominium Associations in the Western Pennsylvania region. Robert had recently purchased his first home in December 2003, and after attending his first HOA meeting, he realized the community volunteers needed assistance in keeping up with the high demand of the residents.
Robert decided to volunteer to help the Board and the community run more efficiently. After some time on the Board and in dealing with community issues, he thought it was in the best interest of the residents to hire a full-time management company. As the Board sought qualified companies, Robert realized there was a need in the Pittsburgh area for a company that would be efficient, responsive, and productive. With that in mind, Robert formed Rj Development Co., which had already been in the preliminary phases as a company that specialized in investor properties.
After Robert resigned from the Board and began the new direction of the company, the Board approved Rj Development Co. to manage their community with their first two-year contract. After the initial contract was awarded, Robert joined the local Chamber of Commerce and began marketing to Homeowner and Condominium Associations in the area. With the need for a management company that was hands on and responsive, Rj Development Co. grew at a steady pace for the first three years. Robert focused on the communities’ and residents’ needs and not on big business. The model worked and within five year of operations, Rj Development Co. opened their first office in Cranberry Township on Route 19. The new office located in Comtra Center was a cozy 300 square feet with three employees.
Within one year of opening their first office, Rj Development Co. was ready to move to a new location to better serve its clients and communities. The new office was set right in the heart of Cranberry Township at the intersection of Route 19 and Rochester Road.
A New Direction
After almost 10 years of business and serving thousands of residents in over 25 communities, it was time to make a change to move the company to the next level of management. In mid-August 2013, Robert Gillenberger, Jr. made the decision to change the name of Rj Development Co. and began a rebranding process that would take the company to another level with a community management firm that would provide its clients in western Pennsylvania with the very best in community management by forming Rj Community Management. One of the main deciding factors in the name change was to better reflect what the company does in its everyday operations. The use of the word Development confused both potential clients and current residents, making some believe Rj Development Co. was a builder or construction company and not the management company.
The new company needed a new and up-to-date logo to reflect not only the name change, but the excitement that the next best thing to hit community management in western Pennsylvania was here. Using input from residents, Board members, friends and the community, a new logo was selected, and the brand formed.
Expansion
In late 2018 Robert was presented an opportunity to acquire an existing and well-known and established community management company in the Pittsburgh area as the owners were planning to retire. The company, Arnheim & Neely Inc., had been a staple in the Pittsburgh region since 1943 and specialized in community association management and apartment rental communities, so it was a perfect fit. The deal was finalized and closed in late August of 2019 doubling the size of Rj Community Management from 73 communities to over 140 and approximately 10,000 households.
To meet this expansion and to accommodate both our existing and newly acquired residents, our headquarters was moved to a more central and larger location in Ross Township, Pennsylvania.
Our team is excited for what the future holds and how we can continue to change the landscape of community management in the Greater Pittsburgh Area.
